Easting Bread and Honey Co. - The idea of a small town bakery is almost as awesome as this one actually is. They remember your name, you can chat them up and never feel rushed, and the jalapeno and cheddar croissants are enough to cure anything that ails you at 9am.
Gabrieau’s Bistro - Open since 1999, Gabrieaus may be a little pricey for students, but definitely not for the parents that come to check up on them. Take them for dinner, then head to the washroom when the cheque arrives. If you’re parents are worried about your culinary abilities, Chef Mark Gabrieau offers cooking classes for anyone looking to move onwards and upwards from Kraft Dinner and hot dogs.
Empire Movie Theatre - Typically showing the big blockbusters, Empire Theatre offers a nice 10$ student deal and a good place to spend an evening off. The Thi rd Eye festival also shows their films here the first Monday of the month, so you can get a bit of culture in with your Randy and Lahey.
Pizza Delight - Pizza Delight is to The Wheel what Sesame Street is to Gossip Girl. Easy going, you can generally count when you’re there and when you leave, and the pizza is covered in cheese, not the inebriated half dressed hoi polloi. Keep it classy Pizza Delight.
The Wheel Pizza and Sub - Can you recognize it in the light of day? Still going strong after too many Friday’ to count, the Wheel is perhaps the only legitimate food destination after 1am. Beware - the lights are bright and the food is best served post 3+ drinks, but the hijinks and chit chat in line are almost better than at the bar.
Cheryl’s Place - Don’t let the fact that it’s hidden around the corner from Tim Hortons and not much bigger than your average living room fool you - this place packs a wallop of talent. Warm, fun and relaxed, Heather specializes in mullet removel - keep that in mind gentlemen.
Moonlight Cafe - Why are there always dueling Chinese food restaurants in the same town? Why does one of them have to be playing the other half of Sting’s greatest hits? Slightly less seedy and a little cheaper, Moonlight is just as delicious, though you have fewer combo choices. They definitely show up Wongs in the fish tank category - I’ll take what look like enormous goldfish over a tank full of lobsters any day.
Lyghtesome Gallery - Hosting niche exhibits such as “Tempest in a Teapot”, a collection of umpteen individual teapots, you’re sure to find something strange and delightful. Peaceful and fun, Lyghtesome is a great place for a rainy afternoon.
Tall and Small - A perennial favorite among students, the Tall and Small really can’t be beat. Complete with adorable smiling staff and great food, Tall and Small always seems as warm and welcoming as their awesome Earl Grey tea. Beware the orange sesame dressing though, a thorough inspection of your teeth is requisite after.
Sunshine Cafe on Main - Living up to it’s name, the Sunshine Cafe is a great place to sit in the big windows and people watch while you drink coffee and wait for food. Aiming to purchase organic products whenever possible and fairly reasonably priced, Sunshine is a good alternative to fast food and fast eating.
Main Expressions - Because dorm room haircuts should be illegal, and because you never really were that great at arts and crafts, Thomas and others at Main Expressions can fix your hack job in a hurry. Though they might scold you - which they should.
Wongs - Occasionally offering half off any combo to students, this place is great for hot fast and generally un-suspect Chinese food. Given you feel like you’ve stepped into the 70’s and “Fields of Gold” always seems to be playing, but that’s pretty much half the appeal.
Botica - For the fashion conscious gal that isn’t satisfied with the op-shop, Botica offers a great alternative. Stylish, well put together collections of clothes make this a bright spot for Antigonish fashionistas.
Sunflower Natural Foods- - From soaps to salve, buckwheat to bulk, stock up here for everything healthy and nutritious.
The Opportunity Shop - Referred to as “The Op Shop”, clothes hunting in this 2nd hand thrift shop is generally like a treasure hunt. Sometimes things smell like wet kittens, sometimes you look like a million bucks. A hour and a few dollars can net you a new outfit, so if you’re willing to put in the time and dimes it’s a great place to stock up. Also excellent if you’re looking to go as any member of “Revenge of the Nerds” or “Flash Dance” for Halloween.
The Alcove - A classy place to take a classy date, the dark wood and real linen impresses...and sometimes distresses when it comes to the menu. Tasty food at palatable prices, this may be a good one to treat yourself at rather than make a regular spot.
Botica - For the fashion conscious gal that isn’t satisfied with the op-shop, Botica offers a great alternative. Stylish, well put together collections of clothes make this a bright spot for Antigonish fashionistas.
