The Fox plays Cupid

As Valentine’s Day rolls around this year, we all are filled with warm sentiments, longings for a significant other, or maybe barely contained lust.
Whether or not you subscribe to the hype that surrounds Valentine’s Day, the fact remains that the themed candy is delicious, and this year we’ll all be able to get an additional special treat delivered in the form of invisible, non-lethal radio waves straight to our ears. That’s right, love is not just in the air this year, Love is on the Air.
Brought to you by our campus radio station (CFXU 93.3 The Fox for those of you not in the know), “Love is on the Air” is a Valentine-themed song request fundraiser that will allow all of our sappy and not so sappy feelings to manifest in the form of song.
“The campaign’s theme is the two sides of Valentine’s Day- there are those who love it and those who despise it,” explains Kathleen Adams, the radio’s resident cupid. “Because of the variety of songs and dedications that can be made, students are able to make their feelings known to the whole campus. The campaign is to raise money for CFXU’s first billboard on the side of the highway.”
“Live calls will not be accepted,” adds Graham Scott, “To get their message and song aired on Valentine’s Day, Romeos and Juliets alike can make their way to the third floor of the SUB every weekday from 10-1 until Feb 10. They make a $2 donation to CFXU, and they can record their personalized love sonnet right there at the table. They can have their choice of available time slots too, so they know when to tune in to hear their message and song on Valentines Day. Messages will be playing on The Fox throughout the day on Feb 14.”
Of course, those who have hearts three sizes too small and possess a strikingly Grinchy demeanor may not see the appeal in such a romantic and funderful way to celebrate the holiday, but as long as you like music, you’re bound to enjoy the aural feast.
Aspiring musicians can even use the event to push their own material on the airways, regardless of how they feel about the human emotion called “love.”
“Students are also encouraged to send us their own recorded music. Just bring us your CD version and we can play your own song. Great publicity for a struggling young musician or a very thoughtful lover,” says Adams. Every student will know when to tune in to hear their song request too. “They choose a 30-minute time slot on Valentine’s Day (Between 7:00am and 12:00pm) and we guarantee that their request will be played.”
Again, students simply need to head on over to the 3rd floor of the SUB between now and February 10th to record their dedication and request their song. If students are having trouble picking a song, there will be a song suggestion list to help them decide what song best captures the emotion they want to spread over the airwaves.
“The student can come between 10am-1pm each day. If you cannot make it to the SUB because of conflicting schedules, but would still like to dedicate a song, email cfxuarch@stfx.ca,” clarifies Adams.
So there you have it. Love is on the Air, or at least that will soon be the case. Lovers, adjust your radio dials accordingly. It’s about to get hot in here.
