Council report: Meeting held February 21, 2010

A regularly scheduled meeting of the StFX Students’ Union Representative Council was held on Sunday, February 21 at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers.

Acting Chair of Council Dave Faour called the meeting to order. Council began by accepting the minutes from the last meeting, which was held on February 14.

Off Campus Councillor Dave MacDonald added to the agenda the ratification of Faour as the official chair of council.

Councillors then delivered their constituency reports.

Science Councillor Andrew Litke noted a concern that arose this past week among students in Dr Michael Steinitz’s first year physics course after some students failed to see the back page of a midterm.

The professor had indicated that the midterm would be conducted again, but after students complained to Steinitz and to the dean of science, it was decided that the original midterm would stand and students who had missed the back page would be allotted five extra minutes.

Following the constituency reports, the union executive made additions to their written reports that had already been given to council.

VP Student Relations Alex Gosselin told council that over the weekend there had been violence between residents of the MacDonald and MacPherson houses.

According to Gosselin, “there is a thorough investigation being done by the residence office right now.”

She also noted that Director of Residence Services Noreen Nunn had a meeting with the residents of both houses earlier Sunday evening and had essentially banned them from entering each others’ residences.

Council then turned to the ratification of Dave Faour as chair of council, for which the body went in camera at 7:24 p.m.

Ending the in camera session at 7:28 p.m., council unanimously ratified Faour to this position. Faour then told council that the performance review committee had met on Friday, February 19 to determine how executives’ job performance is to be reviewed.

He noted two solutions the committee had discussed: self-evaluations for students’ union executives and placing a comment box outside of the council office for students to drop in their comments or concerns about executives’ job performance.

Business and Information Systems Councillor Lindsay Pearl moved to allocate $300 from the union’s donations fund to the business society.

The motion carried, and the council meeting was then adjourned.
