Winter activities at Keppoch
Spend Saturday having fun in the snow. The StFX bus is taking students (for free) to Keppoch Mountain to enjoy tobogganing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. This is a great opportunity to explore Antigonish County and have fun in the massive amounts of snow that Antigonish has been blessed with. The bus leaves at 10:00 a.m. so don’t miss out!
If you can’t make it to Keppoch, the Town of Antigonish is renting out snowshoes to students for five dollars a pair. Bring your student ID with you and explore Antigonish and its fascinating sights.
*The week after reading week, StFX is getting the snowshoes for students to use.
Sunday
Catch the last showing of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew
Currently, Theatre Antigonish is in their last few performances of Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew directed by Shelley Thompson.
Thompson has created a unique version of one of Shakespeare’s most comical plays. Set in the 1950s, The Taming of the Shrew demonstrates a love story within the conventions of gender roles and Rock’n’Roll.
The Taming of the Shrew performances began last week and continue Feb. 17 to 20. Tickets are 12 dollars for adults, ten dollars for seniors and eight dollars for students.
Monday
Spend the day catching up on your favourite show.
The last few weeks have been stressful for students with midterms and papers coming from every which way. Now that you have the opportunity to relax, catch up on the shows you’ve missed. Or pull out that season of the show you’ve been dying to get addicted to. Enjoy, relax and be merry.
Enjoy a night out with your friends bowling. Pinns Entertainment Bowling located on Post Road is a good place to hang out with your buddies, and participate in some friendly competition. Make a night out of it with some drinks and food at the bowling ally. It only costs five dollars per hour for a lane. Bowling is open weeknights until 10:00 p.m. and weekends until 11:00 p.m.
Tuesday
A night at the movies
Movie playing: No Strings Attached
Cast: Natalie Portman, Ashton Kutcher
Plot: In this comedy, Emma and Adam are life-long friends who almost ruin everything by having sex one morning. In order to protect their friendship, they make a pact to keep their relationship strictly “no strings attached.”
“No strings” means no jealousy, no expectations, no fighting, no flowers, no baby voices. It means they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, in whatever public place they want, as long as they don’t fall in love. The question becomes- who’s going to fall first? And can their friendship survive? (Paramount Pictures)
Tuesdays at Empire Theatres located on Main Street, is Reel Deal Tuesdays, only $5.99 for a movie! If you can’t make it Tuesday, there is always the student deal: only $11.99 for admission, regular drink and popcorn. You just need your student ID.
Wednesday
Wing night/photography
Spend the day outdoors with your camera. Even if you’re not the best photographer, there is no time like reading week in the ‘nish to improve those skills.
With the amount of snow Antigonish has, people can capture some beautiful shots outdoors. Begin by gearing up in your snowsuit and light-weight gloves. Then proceed wherever your camera takes you. For some, the confines of your backyard are enough to capture a great shot. Others may need to hike a little further. Either way, go explore Antigonish and don’t forget your camera.
After a cold day, go out to the Pub with your friends (those who are still around during the week) and have a good time at open mic and wing night! 35 cent wings and $8.75 Molson pitchers.
Thursday
Explore Antigonish
Go out for lunch and benefit from some of the amazing restaurants in Antigonish. A simple walk down Main Street and you will be overwhelmed with hunger and excitement over what to choose. Bonus: restaurants won’t be packed with students during the break.
Make some hard earned money over the break. Enjoy a night out with friends and locals at bingo. Located at the Legion, multiple games start as cheap as $2.50. The prize for the winner of each game is cash on the spot.
Friday
Varsity Games
Go support the X-Women’s basketball team at their game against UNB at 6:00 p.m. Followed by the X-Men’s basketball game at 8:00 p.m. versus UNB.
