Back in black

Upon very minimal inspection of my closet, it is easy to see a pattern; or rather, a lack of one.
People have had problems with this in the past, and roommates have even gone so far as to call me a City Bitch. But I’m not apologizing for what is elegant, mysterious, slimming, easy to wear and goes with almost everything.
Black, while not technically a colour, is the greatest colour of all time. It flatters everyone, from the fairest of skin to the darkest. It can be glamorous or casual, sophisticated or edgy, subtle or sexy. Christian Dior once said he could write an entire book about the fabulousness of black, and it’s easy to see why.
While a black piece should always be a go-to for women, there are some things to think about before you drown yourself in it.
DO: Mix different textures and patterns. If you’re wearing a cotton black dress, try wearing patterned black tights with it or a cable-knit cardigan. A black flowered print can also look great with a subtle polka-dot pattern or thin stripes. The idea is to amp up the flatness that can come from wearing black head to toe.
DON’T: Assume that black is black. Some blacks have purple undertones and some have green or blue. If you’re going to wear an all black outfit, make sure that you carefully consider whether or not the pieces you are pairing match.
DO: Throw some punches of colour into your black outfit. If you’re wearing a black skirt, black tights, black boots and a black cardigan, mix it up a little with a bright blouse or t-shirt. Warmer colours look best with black, so opt for dark pinks, golden yellows, and royal blues.
DON’T: Pile on the makeup. I know everyone and their grandmother has vampire fever, but dressing like one isn’t going to make Robert Pattinson want to suck on your neck. All black and heavy makeup can make you look gothic and way overdone, so try to focus on one facial feature, like your eyes or lips, and keep it simple.
DO: Wash your black clothes in cold water. This will ensure that they keep their true colour for longer, and also keep your water-heating bills low. When washing black or any dark item for the first time, add a cup of vinegar to help set the dye.
DON’T: Hang on for too long. When your black clothes, especially those made of cotton, start to fade realize that it’s time to say goodbye. I know it’s sometimes hard to let go of your favourite pieces, but think of it as a punishment for not following the previous DO.
DO: Wear interesting and eye-catching accessories with your black outfit. If you’re wearing black pants, a black top and black shoes, try throwing a pretty patterned scarf around your neck or waist. You’ll still look classy, but the addition of colour or pattern will add a little fun to your look. Bright tights, bags, shoes, or jewellery will also serve the same purpose.
DON’T: Ever, ever, throw out a black piece that is in good condition and fits you well. Even if you’re sick of the garment now, chances are you’ll be missing it in less than three years. Black is a timeless staple, and on-trend accessories are all you need to keep black pieces up to date. Since 1926 when Coco Chanel coined the term “little black dress”, ever woman has made sure she has at least one in her possession.
But don’t limit wearing black to New Year’s functions and funerals. Black is appropriate for all occasions, especially when you want to arrive looking anything but basic.
