Welcome to the working week
September 14, 2026 12:52 PM
A great many students mourn the loss of their summer paycheque come the beginning of term in September. But if you are among those looking for work, not to worry. There are so many diverse jobs on the StFX campus, so there is sure to be one to fit your particular schedule and skill set.
Although many on-campus jobs are advertised in public areas or spread through word of mouth, the best way to get a bigger picture of what’s available is through the Student Career Centre.
The office is located on campus, and can be accessed online via www.mystfx.ca/services/scc. The site gives an overview of what types of jobs are to be found on campus, but one of the best tools they offer is the Jobs listserv.
By joining the listserv through the website, students get regular emails to their StFX webmail that advertise job vacancies on campus. These describe the posting and include where, when, and to whom to apply.
It is always a good idea to ask around about on campus employment as well. Many upper year students have worked around campus and have a good idea of which jobs are well suited to a hectic student schedule. Don’t be afraid to visit an area on campus and ask student employees what their jobs are like.
Clearly the list of on campus jobs is far too long to cover here. A few of the most well known are listed below for ideas. Happy job hunting!
Student Union Representatives
There are a huge variety of positions available through the StFX Student Union to try out. Students elected to Union positions get to try their hand at event planning, team building, on campus services, and leadership. These people work within residences, off campus, and for the Union as a whole in the Bloomfield Centre.
Student Union Services
Those who don’t wish to run for a position might consider appointed union jobs.
These include bar staff of the Golden X Inn and the Campus Police force, who serve our drinks and enforce the community code, respectively.
Both of these jobs are well known as excellent ways to have a good time at work and meet a ton of people.
Fitness and Recreation
StFX Fitness and Recreation employs a large student force of lifeguards, gym staff and instructors, and desk clerks. These jobs can offer the benefit of regular hours, with shifts that end relatively early.
University Services
These jobs include food service at Morrison Hall or on campus cafes. The university also employs tour guides to attract and inform new students and their parents. Student workers also form a large part of the workforce at the Angus L. MacDonald Library.
