Beyond the 100s

The hundred level courses in any given subject serve to prepare students for what is to come. In other words, once the introductions are over, there are some seriously intruiging courses here at StFX.
These are the kinds of classes to get excited about. And if nothing else, some of the following courses will definitelyimprove Trivial Pursuit performance and otherwise cause some serious academic ninja skills.
Shakespeare
Little known fact: the plot of The Lion King is really Shakespeare’s Richard III. This survey course covers some of his greatest. And as the Bard is so frequently referenced in pop culture, this course makes students feel smarter and more well read with each class.
Abnormal Psychology
What makes someone a sociopath? What is abnormality and why do people act the way they do? What drives the legendary disorders that pervade horror movies and news headlines? Answers lie within this fascinating course.
Children’s Literature
Ever wonder about the pathology surrounding a favourite childhood book? Explore the works of Roald Dahl and Judy Blume from a critical perspective. The readings certainly won’t feel like work.
History of Popular Music
This course will increase appreciation for the greats of recent pop history. Getting course credit for knowing the historical significance of hair bands… sounds like a pretty good time.
Introduction to Film
What role does film play in our cultural and artistic expression? Take a critical look at the way films represent us or call us into question, entertain us or disturb us.
Anthropology of Gender
What is the difference between male and female? What does it mean to be male, female or any gender in between? Are our conceptions of gender created by biology, society or both? Anthropology of gender explores this question.
