Online sunshine: blogs to brighten your day

There are countless time-wasting gems on the World Wide Web: Facebook, addictive games, Wikipedia, and the like. Unfortunately, hours wasted perusing these sites often induces the “procrastination blahs”, including mixed feelings of guilt and uselessness that accompany hours lost.
The following blogs are the perfect solution to these procrastination blahs (and most other woes for that matter) - little bits of online sunshine to brighten up any day.

Since March 2009, California-based artist, Inhae, has posted episodes of photos and accompanying captions chronicling the adventures of ickle and Lardee: two baby teeth.
As a child, Inhae wondered what happened to her baby teeth when she put them under her pillow- a question that inspired her to create the hilarious and heart-warming episodes.
Created out of polymer clay and acrylic paint, the figurines are very impressive, and her photography of them is fantastic. Standout episodes include “Toof Cleaning” (found under the June 2009 heading), and “ickle, ickle!” (Aug. 2009).

Cute Overload is a seemingly never-ending collection of Lolcats-captioned pictures and videos of animals doing hilarious heart-wrenchingly adorable things.
While Cute Overload does often feature the usual suspects (bunnies, puppies, kittens, etc), they also celebrate the unsung heroes of cuteness: yaks, porcupines, goats, and even gorillas are featured doing some pretty freaking adorable acts of cuteness.
Prepare to have your inner six-year-old desiring a pet fawn/pig/squirrel/all of the above after viewing this site.

Founded by music enthusiast Nick Guarino, This Song is Sick offers free legal downloads of an abundance of new hip hop and house music every day.
Though featured songs are primarily bass-heavy party tunes, Guarino throws a few curve balls to keep things interesting, including a lullaby-like Kid Cudi cover of “Pursuit of Happiness” by Barbara.
Guarino is certainly not a writer by trade (the only superlatives he uses to describe the songs are “sick” and “bangin’”), but his commitment to the blog and evident enthusiasm are endearing nonetheless. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for “sick” remixes by Steve Aoki, HyperCrush, and MSTRKRFT.

Meet Mark, a 26-year-old from Los Angeles. Mark reviews each chapter of the Harry Potter series (he is currently working through the Half-Blood Prince), and the Twilight Saga with a humorous, thought-provoking, and entertaining flair.
For avid fans of Harry Potter, his excitement as he reads through the chapters is a delightful reminder of what it was like to read the books for the first time. Mark is far less enthused with the Twilight Saga- these reviews tend to be slightly more entertaining to read, as his outrage is soaked in dry wit.
Mark is quick to point out the transparent misogyny and gender issues in Meyer’s writing and critiques it well. Throughout his blog, he offers insight into his personal life as a gay male and the difficulty that has entailed. A great read for when you have time on your hands- the blog is as lengthy as the books themselves.
