Justin Bieber, Imma tell you one time to mind your business

I am a Belieber. I saw Never Say Never in theatres, half of the 479 180 276 views on Bieber’s “Baby” on YouTube are from me, and I can’t help but go “SQUEEEEE” when I see him do that spastic hair flip thing (that unfortunately he can no longer do, RIP Bieber bangs).
Bieber holds a special place in my heart, alongside puppies and The Muppets.
That being said, I was enraged to see Bieber’s terribly misguided opinions voiced in this month’s Rolling Stone. The following comes from Rolling Stone’s website:
“He isn’t sure what political party he’d support if he was old enough to vote. ‘I’m not sure about the parties,’ Bieber says. ‘But whatever they have in Korea, that’s bad.’ He does have a solid opinion on abortion. ‘I really don’t believe in abortion,’ Bieber says. ‘It’s like, killing a baby.’ How about in cases of rape? ‘Um. Well, I think that’s really sad, but everything happens for a reason. I don’t know how that would be a reason. I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.’”
Uh, I beg your pardon?
Upon reading this, my initial reaction was harsh. How on Earth is he so oblivious, inarticulate, and frankly, inconsiderate?
Rape happens for a reason?! Abortion is wrong because it’s, “like, killing a baby?”
I don’t think so, Biebs. He is in absolutely no place to comment on any of those things, as his answers demonstrate.
I wish he had at least backed his answers up. He could have said he doesn’t believe in abortion, but acknowledges a need for social structures to help mothers in need, and understands why women need a right to choose.
He could have said that while he knows nothing about politics, he needs to start paying attention to global issues.
I have no suggestions on how to improve his answer on rape; that was just ridiculous. Then I took a step back. The kid is barely seventeen (HAPPY BIRTHDAY BIEBER xoxo <3). When I was seventeen, I had some pretty questionable world views too.
I thought feminism was a dirty word, thought politics were like, boring- and would have had uninformed, bubbly Miss-America style answers to those same questions.
However, unlike my teen years, Bieber is not just a “regular” teen. Presumably, he has had media training.
It’s evident the reporters at Rolling Stone were asking controversial questions in order to get controversial answers, drawing attention to the interview and increasing sales.
Instead of feeding them the answers they were fishing for, Bieber should have answered those questions the way he finished his answer about his stance on rape- “I guess I haven’t been in that position, so I wouldn’t be able to judge that.”
It’s unfortunate that Bieber has to live out his cringe-worthy teen years in front of the world- and even more so that he evidently doesn’t have people helping him out of embarrassing situations like these.
I have a feeling Bieber is going to wince at these answers in a few years as he matures and is exposed to more of life. At least, I hope so.
