Keep your politics out of my uterus

Former Governor of Arkansas, rumored Republican Presidential candidate, and one of countless Fox News Channel bigots (I mean, television hosts) Mike Huckabee has had a helluva lot to say about what’s going on in Natalie Portman’s uterus as of late.
He astutely observes: “…one of the things that’s troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, ‘Hey look, you know, we’re having children, we’re not married, but we’re having these children, and they’re doing just fine. I think it gives a distorted image …. Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.
And that’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock.”
In the eloquent words of Jersey Shore’s Deena Coretese: “GET. REAL.”
Natalie Portman, like many other unwed mothers out there, is incredibly successful. She is a Harvard graduate, an Oscar-winning actress, has studied six languages, and was published in a professional scientific journal before she finished high school.
Like all unwed mothers, her status does not compromise her success, nor does it make her a “bad influence” on society at large. She is not a national problem.
Some people have no interest in getting married- that does not make them public enemies.
A quick Google search (and some deductive logic) tells me that Huckabee does not believe women should have the right to choose abortion.
So riddle me this, Mike Huckabee- what SHOULD Portman have done?
Apparently she shouldn’t be loud and proud about her recent pregnancy, engagement, and Oscar, and she definitely shouldn’t be getting an abortion… so what exactly should she be doing?
Sitting at home, clutching her pearls and crying her eyes out over her supposed self-inflicted shame?
It’s a not-so-strange coincidence that Bristol Palin, also an unwed mother, has been celebrated by the Republican right as beacon of inspiration for the anti-abortion cause, not condemned for “glamorizing” single motherhood.
If Huckabee truly cared about the plight of single mothers, he would put his money where his mouth is and advocate the very programs and funding the Republicans are currently trying to cut.
According to Huckabee, single mothers and their offspring depend on government assistance in order to avoid poverty and death- if he truly cared, he would be a lot more concerned about the Republican push to cut funding to Head Start and Planned Parenthood than Natalie Portman’s pregnancy.
Portman is, in fact, engaged to babydaddy Benjamin Millepied. Huckabee would have known this if he had done his research, or even turned on “Entertainment Tonight” for five minutes.
Not that it really matters, or that Huckabee would care anyway. He saw the opportunity to use Portman as a scapegoat and took it, regardless of credibility.
Frankly, this whole debacle is another example of the Republican right grasping at any possible evidence to support their bigoted, misogynistic views.
If this was Huckabee’s best attempt to convince us that he is truly concerned for struggling single mothers, I’m not buying it.
