CPs in jeopardy, but should we care?

Am I the only one in this school who does not even remotely care if the campus police are eliminated to become a new task force that instead is not run by “students” but administratively?

Surely, I can’t be the only student who realizes that if either the campus police stay, or a new force is implemented, we still will be dealing with the same hypocritical “don’t judge me, it’s just the badge” security that have the audacity to call themselves students.

Okay, yeah that first paragraph may come off like I want absolutely no security and a completely chaotic and almost Lord of the Flies atmosphere at StFX.

Although that would be kind of cool, I do have a little bit of sense and agree that there should definitely be some type of governing security to keep our students safe.

Especially in the fighting town of Antigonish.

But really what I want to say is that campus police should put away their guns, and stop trying to handcuff every student into siding with them.

Ever take into consideration that maybe some students here don’t care if they’re replaced?
Just because they wear sweet windbreakers doesn’t necessarily make them God, and maybe students just realize that we’re screwed both ways.

Campus police or new security task force?

They’re synonyms; either way students are getting told to adhere to a bunch of guidelines, that let’s face it, most of us would actually break when the supposed “badge” is hung up.

Most students do have bad experiences with CPs at one point or another.

Take for instance one that I witnessed. I was waiting in line for the Inn, which almost seemed like a line-up for the pearly gates.

The CPs were doing their usual job of checking IDs and letting people in.

Now, we all know there is a huge medieval chain, that serves as the boundary between the line and getting into the Inn.

Well, just as the CP finished carding people for the Viper Room (I mean the Inn) he forcefully yanked the chain in place, like he was protecting the human race from zombies, causing a guy in front of me to trip.

Now, this guy got up, was apologetic, and seemed not nearly intoxicated as he should have been for a night at Club 54 (I mean the Inn).

But instead, the campus police didn’t take into consideration the large chain, the incredibly busy line, and completely blamed the guy for being “too drunk”.

The two bickered back and forth, with the guy who tripped speaking so fluently, he could have been put on stage for an act of the Merchant of Venice.

But no, that wasn’t enough for the CP (who clearly preferred a rendition of Hamlet) and told him to leave or get into the back of the huge line, and wait again.

Too drunk, but can still wait in the line? Interesting.

The point of the story was that this guy wasn’t a threat, nor did he do anything wrong. How the chain was applied was the problem, and the CP’s assessment of the situation was just wrong.

Show some compassion, because beyond your wind breaker, you really are just one of us. Moral of the story is maybe some of us just don’t care if the campus police get restructured.
Maybe we don’t want to support or sign your petition. Whether or not they all keep their positions, or get replaced by a new security force, students are still going to face the same ridiculousness every weekend.
